Society as we know it is at risk. Good.

A columnist in a major British newspaper is worried about young women. Specifically, she's worried that they're angry, progressive, anti-capitalist, and increasingly uninterested in marrying men who don't share their values. She finds this alarming. Dangerous, even. She ends the piece suggesting we strand them on an island with cavalry officers until they calm down.

I actually think she's right. I think society as we know it genuinely is at risk. and it makes me freaking ecstatic✨

The planet is on fire. Actual fire, and also the slower bureaucratic kind where we've known about it for fifty years and responded primarily with conferences. The gap between what the richest people own and what everyone else has is not a gap anymore, it's a canyon, and it keeps widening. The richest 1% produce more carbon emissions annually than the poorest 66% of humanity combined. A woman is killed by a partner or family member every 11 minutes. At current rates of progress, we'll reach gender equality in approximately 300 years.

They've been saying this for a while, by the way.

Here's what those dangerous women actually gave us:

The right to vote. To own property. To open a bank account without a husband's signature — which, for the record, wasn't guaranteed in the US until 1974. The right to not be fired for getting pregnant. Access to education. Legal protection against being beaten by the person you share a home with.

Every single one of those things had a headline like this. Every single one was going to destroy the family. Undermine civilization. (and encourage witchcraft, apparently 🙄).

And then it didn't. Or it did, and the family survived. And civilization, such as it is, kept going.

Which brings us back to the angry young women.

The columnist is worried they're too angry. Too anti-capitalist. Too unwilling to soften their positions for approachability. That they're spurning marriage, rejecting the system, and generally being inconvenient.

Good.

A system that requires women's compliance to function, that redistributes cost downward and profit upward, that is measurably, empirically, not working — deserves to be inconvenienced.

Society as we know it is at risk.
